Understory: Snakes, Snails, and the Forest Floor at Pamela Salisbury Gallery

  • Pamela Salisbury Gallery (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Understory opens Saturday, August 31, 2024, and continues through Sunday, October 6, 2024. The gallery will host an artists’ reception from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Saturday, August 31st at 362 1/2 Warren St, Hudson, NY.

Pamela Salisbury Gallery is pleased to present Understory: Snakes, Snails, and the Forest Floor, a site-wide exhibition inspired by the sottobosco paintings of the 17th century.

Understory includes contemporary depictions of woodland life by over 50 artists, including Kiki Smith, Fred Tomaselli, Suzan Frecon, Roxy Paine, Judy Pfaff, Portia Munson, Sharon Core, Claire Sherman, Tanya Marcuse, Jean Silverthorne, Donna Moylan, among others.

Fruiting bodies of fungi, reptiles, native plants, insects, and other woodland species are explored through diverse media including works on paper, sculpture, painting, photography, embroidery, jewelry, terrariums, and other installations with live plant materials.

The idea for the show began with a love for the flora and fauna of the Hudson Valley woodlands, punctuated with a passion for the 17 Century Dutch master Otto Marseus van Schrieck (ca.1619-1678, Netherlands). Otto Marseus and his contemporaries encouraged the conversation between art and science through the development of a pictorial concept which placed still life within the landscape.

The artist historian Karin Leonhard explains:

The 1650s saw the sudden emergence of a very specific kind of still-life paintings, the so-called sottobosco. Sottoboschi depict botanical and zoological life in dark underwoods or at the humid margins of pools, and as a sub-genre were invented in Italy in the 1650s by the Dutch painter Otto Marseus van Schrieck and adopted by artists like Rachel Ruysch, Elias van den Broeck, Abraham Begeyn and Franz de Hamilton….they have started to gain attention from art historians because of their intermediate position between nature and art, as well as for their inherent microcosmic and microscopic dimensions.

The exhibition will be installed on 6 floors of gallery space including two galleries on Warren Space, the sculpture courtyard, and our historic Carriage House. For additional information and/or a complete list of artists, please contact Pamela Salisbury Gallery at info@pamelasalisburygallery.com.

I know a bank where the wild thyme blows,

Where oxlips and the nodding violet grows,

Quite overcanopied with luscious woodbine,

With sweet muskroses, and with eglantine.

Strange States at Shelburne Museum

Strange States is the third installation of the Museum’s popular biennial series, New England Now, which began in 2018. This exhibition will explore how regional contemporary artists are incorporating surrealist, supernatural, fantastical, or occult themes and humor into their multimedia work. New England has long been a refuge for artists seeking liberations from the limitations of reality and discovering infinite possibilities and meanings through their work.

FLORAL HEX @ 13Forest gallery

Floral Hex is currently on view at 13FOREST Gallery through April 16. This solo exhibit highlights the paintings of Nicole Duennebier, an artist who's been working in Massachusetts for over ten years, exhibiting across the state both solo and alongside her sister, Caitlin. Floral Hex is Duennebier's third solo show at 13FOREST Gallery, featuring paintings of flowers and floral arrangements. Her compositions bring to mind the old masters, Dutch still-lifes and Rococo landscapes in their attention to detail. But these paintings aren't idly pretty artworks, as Duennebier prefers to inject an element of the grotesque into her work, making her pieces simultaneously compelling and challenging. Some paintings feature floral wreaths and memorials depicted in lonely caves and desolate woods, conveying a sense of melodrama and isolation. Others contain carelessly squashed blossoms and fluttering insects marring the beauty of a bouquet. Perhaps most striking are the paintings in which flowers surround dead fish or slimy, unidentifiable meat. Each artwork has something unsettling about it, whether obvious or subtle, that adds a layer of emotional depth. Duennebier's work in Floral Hex is complex, both beautiful and uncanny, offering an duality that both repulses and entrances the viewer. 13FOREST Gallery is located at 167A Massachusetts Avenue in Arlington, Massachusetts and is open Tuesday—Sunday, 12:00—6:00 p.m. For more information, visit 13forest.com/floral-hex.

More then a Riot

More Than a Riot showcases the work of female and female-identifying artists across all media who are creating art in conversation with the current cultural climate, specifically issues of inequality and feminism. The exhibition highlights contemporary voices confronting bias, injustice, and hate who, through their work, refuse to be silenced. While we have a long way to go in the United States, the work of these artists proves it’s always been more than a riot, it’s a revolution.
